the story
short bio
With an endless supply of blistering riffs, rough, gritty vocals, and timelessly catchy, anthemic choruses, No Bull is one of the most entertaining, high octane bands out of Sydney, Australia. Formed and spearheaded by the prolific James van Hest with the idea to keep hard core rock n roll alive, he has worked on writing some of the most ballbreaking songs to fill the bands multiple full length albums.
EXTENDED BIO:
The band emerged from Sydney, Australia on the live music circuit in March 2024,
spearheaded by the prolific James van Hest. Serving as lead guitarist and vocalist, van Hest along
with Tommy “Hillsy” Hills on bass, Nick Harris on drums, and Tom Christides are putting the "hard"
back into hard rock with their undiluted, pure rock ‘n’ roll sound.
No Bull draws inspiration from the likes of AC/DC, Black Label Society, Metallica, Alice In Chains,
B.B.King. They deliver a loud, guitar driven sound that's been described as a blend of hard rock,
blues and metal. They may not be a metal band but it’s mixed within their style.
Van Hest's musical journey was profoundly influenced by AC/DC, a band he credits with teaching him
most of what he knows about music. This foundational impact is evident in No Bull's sound,
particularly in the instrumental drive influenced by Phil Rudd's thick kick and snare patterns and the
glue of Cliff Williams' consistent eighth-note basslines. Van Hest's bluesy lead guitar work channels
the raw energy of Angus Young & Zakk Wylde, while the band's overall sound is a potent blend of
gravelly hard rock with metallic undertones, moving beyond simple genre categorization. James says
it's his way of keeping alive what Angus and Malcolm Young started with AC/DC.
No Bull quickly made a name for themselves on the Australian live music circuit, tearing up stages at iconic venues like The Crowbar, The Bridge Hotel & Cherry Bar and supporting bands such as Heaven, Mystery, Avalanche & Black Aces. With more recently becoming an internationally touring act by successfully taking on Japan. No Bull's electrifying performances have built them a reputation for leaving audiences breathless, stunned, and begging for more, as evidenced by the 100 plus explosive live shows they’ve delivered together!
